Aout Broken Storm Windows
There are plenty of articles about consumer rating for replacement windows but today I want to look at something different.
Do not start with the replacement of your storm windows until you have all the necessary tools in place. Find some pliers, well measured tempered glass, goggles for safety, putty knife, gloves, glazing compound, brush and a trash container for the glass that can be thrown away.
Take the putty knife or any other flat instrument and remove all the old caulking. Make sure that glazer points are saved -if there are any that need saving. Once you’ve done that try to remove the glass. Just make sure you have your gloves and goggles on you. Brush chips or slivers away. You need to then accurately measure the space where the window will go. You should measure all the sides i.e. the top and bottom and the left and right sides.
You should see a place where you can fit the glass. That is exactly the part to be measured. Make sure the galss is not too tight nor too loose. Give a 1/8 inch allowance on either the top or bottom and on one side. Now take your time and try to fit the glass into the frame. Do not rush when doing this.
Replace old glazier’s points if the window had them. Take the glazing compound, if it is on the dry side, roll it around in your bare hand to soften it; If you are using a fresh one then there is no need to soften it.
The next step is about spreading the glazing compound. Take it and spread it around the window with the putty knife. Make sure it is sealed neatly into the wooden frame or metal one – depending on which one you have. Using the putty knife cover all sides, get enough in the corners. View from the other side you should not see calking. On the following day make sure that you clean any caulking that was spilled and then leave everything for a week – to set on its own.
By the way if you find this to be complext just find replacement window contractor to offer some assistance.
